I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Vehicle crime (theft from or theft of), which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. Following our Neighbourhood Policing Team dealing with a few incidents the last week in our area, we just want to provide you with some further crime prevention advice.
Preventing vehicle theft and break-ins requires a combination of vigilance, secure parking, and anti-theft devices.
Basic Security Practices Lock doors and windows every time you leave your vehicle, even for a short period, and take your keys with you. Leaving keys inside is a major risk factor for theft.
Do not leave valuables in plain sight, including electronics, purses, or important documents, as these attract thieves.
Avoid leaving spare keys in or near the vehicle, as thieves often check common hiding spots.
Lock the trunk, hatchback, or tailgate, especially on SUVs and station wagons, to prevent easy access.
Parking and Visibility Park in well-lit areas or near streetlights to deter opportunistic thieves.
Avoid parking next to large vehicles that can obscure your car from view.
Lock your garage door and your vehicle even when parked inside a garage.
Anti-Theft Devices Audible alarms and visible deterrents like steering wheel locks, flashing lights, or window etching can discourage theft.
Immobilizing devices prevent hot-wiring or ignition bypass, including key chips or engine cut-off systems.
GPS tracking devices or aftermarket trackers (e.g., AirTags) can help locate a stolen vehicle quickly.
Security film on windows strengthens glass, making it harder for thieves to break in.
Locks for gas caps, batteries, and wheel covers protect valuable parts from theft.
Behavioral Precautions Never leave your vehicle running unattended, even briefly.
Remove electronic ignition components if leaving your vehicle for an extended period to prevent theft.
We hope you find our advice useful. Please remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
